So, I’m on this minimizing kick at the moment, getting rid of things left, right and centre, selling and donating, trashing stuff I never use, really ridding myself of useless crap. I want to stop wasting time with all of these things and stop wasting money so those are my two biggest goals…?
In the past few years, I have constantly straightened my hair and it takes a helluva long time to do so. My natural hair is basically an afro with some waves in it. Remember this photo?
Basically, that is my hair on the weekend, hehe. Well, just short of, anyway. It takes me a good half hour to an hour to straighten my hair with the aid of straightening or smoothing serums. Even then, in our humid weather (that is pretty much around, all year round), my hair can start to flip itself out or my scalp begins to perspire from the hot weather and the edges are completely ruined and cannot be re-straightened because the hair essentially has become wet. This is all while using the best of the best: GHD.
Don’t get me wrong- it is NOT the GHD’s fault. That’s my baby of over 3 years now, you just lay off, you hear?
I really think the problem here is the goddamn weather, stupid bloody climate change and all that yada, yada, yada… Every morning for the past two months, I have had cold showers only for the water to turn mildy warm after a minute of being on. Warm shower makes my ensuite steam up by default, I start perspiring as soon as I drop the towel and I can barely put my make up on without wiping my kabuki over a wet spot on my supposedly dry cheek!!!! Then I have been trying to do my hair- style it, straighten it, something it, I don’t bloody know what. All I know is eveyrtime I have tried working with my hair through this weather, I may as well not have…
I have been wasting electricity, the life of my GHD, hair products and more importantly, time.
Most Importantly, MY TIME.
I have been late to work a few times due to me repeating the same mistakes day after day.
But no more, finally. With my newfound attitude and resolutions, I have decided that it takes too much time and stresses me out too much to try straightening my hair or styling it every single day.
For work only, I have resolved to have a set hairstyle that no longer requires a straightener or serums or hours on end of perfection. For 5 days a week (and God willing I don’t get bad tension headaches for doing so), I will endeavour to wear my hair in a simple bun. Accentuated with a headband: Blair Waldorf style or a simple braid through one part or a pretty clip to pin it up, of course. Like these:
Well, you get the picture, yes? And I have trialled said hair dos for 5 days and the results?
- Not late to work at all for 5 days straight even though I am doing all the same stuff in regards to conversing with MOH, internetz while breakfasting, ironing, showering, applying makeup and choosing jewellery.
- I didn’t feel the least bit stressed in the mornings like I used to.
- I was able to utilise clips and headbands I hadn’t used in ages.
- I didn’t sweat out my hairdo as soon as it went up.
- I didn’t have to worry about flipping my hair back or pushing it back or anything to do with flyaways.
All in all, I think it has been a great week for me, stress and time wise. And I realise the less I worry about my appearance, I find I can relax more and live more. And even though it’s the weekend tomorrow, I don’t think I’ll be reachin’ for my straightener for a little while more. It’s just too hot for that. And I need to live!
